ACT Composite Score Calculator

Enter your section scores below and get your composite score. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Enter English, Math and Reading to see your composite.

How the ACT composite score works

Each section is scored from 1 to 36. Your composite score is the average of your section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. A fraction of one half or more rounds up, so an average of 27.5 becomes 28 and an average of 27.25 becomes 27.

Science is optional on the current ACT. If you did not take it, the composite is the average of English, Math and Reading. The calculator above does the same: leave Science blank and it averages the sections you entered. Check act.org for the rules that apply to your test date.

Why we don't convert raw scores

The number of questions you answer correctly (your raw score) is converted to the 1–36 scale using a chart that changes from one test form to the next. A raw score of 50 can map to a slightly different scale score on two different tests. Any calculator that promises one exact conversion is guessing, so this one starts from the scale scores printed on your score report.

What to do with your composite

  • Compare it to the middle 50% range of the colleges you are considering. Most colleges publish that range on their admissions pages.
  • Look at your lowest section. One weak section pulls the average down further than most students expect.
  • If you plan to retake, set a target for each section, not just the composite.
