Arithmetic & Fractions
Get a common denominator to add or subtract, multiply straight across, and flip to divide.
The rules
- Add or subtract fractions only after they have the same denominator.
- Multiply numerators and denominators. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal.
- Order of operations: parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division left to right, then addition and subtraction.
- Simplify at the end, and check whether the answer should be a mixed number or a decimal.
Watch out: Adding denominators (1/3 + 1/4 is not 2/7).
Worked example
What is 3/4 + 5/8?
- Rewrite 3/4 as 6/8.
- 6/8 + 5/8 = 11/8.
