Linear Modeling Word Problems

Identify the starting amount and the rate of change.

The rules

  • In y = mx + b, b is the starting value and m is the rate per unit.
  • Define the variable in words before writing the equation.
  • Answer what is asked: the value, the rate or the time.
  • Check that units match.
Watch out: Swapping the rate and the starting amount.
Worked example

A taxi costs $4 plus $2.50 per mile. A ride costs $29. How many miles?

  1. Write 4 + 2.5m = 29.
  2. 2.5m = 25, so m = 10.
