Mean, Median & Mode

Mean is the average, median is the middle, mode is the most common.

The rules

  • Mean = sum / count.
  • Median: order the numbers first. For an even count, average the middle two.
  • Mode can have more than one value, or none.
  • Adding a very large value raises the mean more than the median.
Watch out: Not sorting before finding the median.
Worked example

What is the median of 21, 16, 30, 12, 25?

  1. Sort: 12, 16, 21, 25, 30.
  2. The middle value is 21.

Answer: 21
