Read the labels first, then find the values.

The rules

  • Read the title, axes, and units.
  • Use the key.
  • Compare values directly. Estimate when asked.
  • Check that the claim matches the data.
Watch out: Misreading the scale or units.
Worked example

A bar graph shows 30 students walk and 45 bike. What percent of the 75 students bike?

  1. 45/75.
  2. = 0.6 or 60%.

Answer: 60%
