Systems of Inequalities
Graph each inequality and find the overlap.
The rules
- Graph each boundary line, dashed for < or > and solid for ≤ or ≥.
- Shade the correct side. Test a point such as (0, 0).
- The solution is the region where all the shadings overlap.
- In word problems, the corner points of the region help find a max or min.
Watch out: Shading the wrong side. Test a point.
Worked example
Is (1, 1) a solution of y > x and y < 3?
- y > x means 1 > 1, which is false.
- So (1, 1) is not a solution.
Answer: No
