Volume & Surface Area

Pick the formula that matches the solid.

The rules

  • Rectangular box: V = lwh. Cylinder: V = πr²h. Sphere: V = (4/3)πr³. Cone: V = (1/3)πr²h.
  • Surface area adds up the area of every face.
  • Be careful with units: cubic for volume, square for area.
  • Use the given radius, not the diameter.
Watch out: Using the diameter in place of the radius.
Worked example

A cube has a surface area of 96. What is its volume?

  1. 6 faces, so each face has area 16.
  2. Side = 4, volume = 64.

Answer: 64
